What Is ROS 2: Architecture Overview
ROS 2 is a distributed communication framework plus tooling ecosystem for robotics: nodes exchange data over topics, services and actions, with no central master like ROS 1 — discovery and transport are delegated to DDS. The current LTS distro is Jazzy Jalisco (released May 2024, supported until May 2029, paired with Ubuntu 24.04); the previous LTS Humble reaches end-of-life in May 2027. Client libraries are rclpy (Python) and rclcpp (C++), both built on the same rcl/RMW layers.
